Sinus Graft
When replacing back teeth in the upper jaw, there is often not enough bone available. In these cases, artificial bone is placed into the sinus — a procedure called sinus grafting. In skilled hands it delivers very predictable results, and without it many patients would be unable to have implants in a part of the mouth where teeth are so commonly missing.
The Sinus Graft Procedure
Too little bone
When a back upper tooth is missing, often only a thin layer of bone remains — too thin to place an implant safely without first rebuilding the bone.
Lifting the sinus floor
A small opening is created in the sinus and the floor is gently lifted, creating space for new bone to be added beneath it.
Adding bone & placing the implant
The space is filled with bone-grafting material (calcium granules). About six months later, once the new bone has matured, the implant is placed.
